Taiwan natives submit
Story translation (partial)
While the various savages (shoban) of Taiwan ceremoniously came down to [present themselves at] our military outposts, only the natives (dojin) of Botan village (Botansha) escaped into the mountainous forests. With the mediation of the chieftains who submitted earlier, they surrendered and apologized for their crimes in the 7th month of the 2534th year of Imperial Era [1874]. This chastisement of the barbarians (seiban) can be said to be the first step in the advancement of the enlightenment (kaika) of this island." (WW)
