Students learn to say "ni nin ga shi, ni shi ga hachi" (二二が四、二四が八), which means "2 x 2 is four, 2 times 4 is eight". But since "shi" can also mean death and "hachi" is close to "haji", one can imagine the title of this story, "ni nin ga shi, ni shi ga haji" (二二が死、二死が恥). While most puns are easily understood without any visual help, this one is more quickly comprehended, out of context, by working backward, as it were, from the kanji. To be continued. |
